Fire damages building in downtown Huntington

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — A massive fire in downtown Huntington Sunday has left investigators with a lot of questions.

Flames were shooting from the roof of the Morris Building on the corner of 4th Ave. and 9th Street when fire crews arrived on the scene at shortly after 9 a.m. Residents and workers in seven story building, which housed two restaurants and multiple apartments, were quickly evacuated.

It took more than four hours to get the fire under control. Huntington firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading to nearby buildings despite strong winds. Crews battled the blaze from the roof and the street.

There was only one injury, a firefighter hurt a knee.

An initial report said the fire may have started in an old elevator shaft near the roof but a full-fledged investigation is expected Monday.
