Tinsley takes over offense for Hurricane as Redskins replace 18 total starters

HURRICANE, W.Va. — Hurricane enters the upcoming football season having to replace 18 of its 22 starters from a season ago. The Redskins finished the 2013 regular season at 6-4, earning a playoff berth as the No. 14 seed where they lost to Capital 38-10.

“We return one offensive lineman and one receiver on offense, along with one defensive back and one defensive end on defense,” said head coach Jeremy Taylor. “We’ve got a job ahead of us, but I think we have some kids that got some playing time last year and some game experience.”

Job number one in preseason camp for Taylor’s club is to settle on a starting quarterback. Rising seniors Dylan Tinsley and Luke Browne both took reps during the three week practice period and 7-on-7s.

“Both of them are pretty good and they do different things well,” Taylor said. “Luke was our backup last year and stepped in when Austin (Hensley) went down early in the year and he did a good job of managing the game. Dylan was at quarterback a couple of years ago and then moved over to defense in his junior year.

“He does a real good job on defense, but with (our new) offense, we have to have our best quarterback available,” he continued. “If (Dylan Tinsley) is it, then that is where he’s going to be. But if not, that just makes our defense that much better.”

Hurricane heads into 2014 with a new offensive coordinator and overall 18 starters to replace.

That offense is being installed by new offensive coordinator Scott Tinsley, the former Nitro and WVU Tech head football coach.

“The kids really enjoy the offense,” Taylor said. “You can tell they want to learn and are eager to learn. He brings in a whole new dynamic of what we’ve done in the past.”

Tinsley, meanwhile, is just glad to have the opportunity to get back out on the field.

“It’s great, I’ve missed this,” Tinsley said. “The players have been great. They’re catching onto the offense quick. We still have a ways to go, but they are catching on pretty quick. We’ve changed the offense some – the college game made you get rid of the ball a little quicker sometimes, so we’re trying to work underneath a little more than what we used to.”

The Redskins will open up the year with a road trip at last year’s Class AAA state runner-up Huntington.

“We’ll play four of the top eight teams in the state and probably a fifth one who will probably be top 10,” Taylor said. “We’ve got a tough schedule. I think we’re ready for a challenge, I think these kids are ready and the new attitude in Hurricane is to not lay down, keep battling and I think we’ll be fine.”
