Nursing scholarship program gets new look

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Higher Education Policy Commission approved rules for a nursing scholarship program at its meeting Friday. The program was revamped in a bill passed earlier this year by the state legislature.

State Higher Education Chancellor Dr. Paul Hill said other groups had been overseeing the program but there was agreement to allow the HEPC to handle it because it operates similar scholarship programs.

“It was decided that we could efficiently run that program because we run lots of other scholarship programs. It’s just something we had expertise in,” Hill said Friday.

Those students who apply can receive anywhere from $1,000 to $15,000 scholarship awards with an agreement to practice in hospitals and other health-care facilities in the state from 1-2 years.

The HEPC also approved an engineering management program for Bluefield State College at Friday’s meeting.
