Huntington makes good on crime crackdown promise

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Huntington Police Chief Jim Johnson said the 11 o’clock bus to Detroit was sold out Tuesday morning as police officers were conducting Operation: River to Jail.

Johnson said the sweep, which netted 22 arrests, was about street level drugs.

“A lot of satisfaction today for the officers,” Johnson said during an afternoon news conference.

The sweep is part of a new more aggressive effort announced last month by Huntington Mayor Steve Williams and backed by a $500,000 allocation from city council.

Police obtained 63 arrest warrants and more than four dozen Huntington police officers participated along with federal authorities.

Chief Johnson said Tuesday’s sweep was just the start.

“This effort was only the initial stage. It will be relentless. It is not going to stop. You’re going to see a difference,” he promised.

Part of the Mayor Williams’ plan is to hire 10 additional police officers.

Police seized heroin, pills, marijuana and cash as part of Tuesday’s efforts.
