U.S. Marine Corps League holds convention in Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Charleston’s economy is getting an economic boost this week from attendees of the 91st U.S. Marine Corps League Convention.

League members are holding meetings at two city hotels and enjoying the activities in and around the Charleston area.

“They’re doing some recreational activities around town and around the region. They’re also holding meetings at the Embassy (Suites) and the Marriott while they’re here. So it’s a combination for them of conference and fun,” Tim Brady of the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau said.

The convention is one of the largest in Charleston in recent years. It will stretch into Saturday.

“All of the downtown hotels are either full or near capacity,” Brady said. “This is great business for those hotels because not only they are full but they are full for several days because these people are here for nearly a week.”

Brady said a lot of Marine Corps League members plan their vacations around the organization’s convention. He said it will pay off for Charleston.

“It’s going to be near or above a 200-million dollar economic impact,” Brady predicted.
