Loud boom but no fire

NITRO, W.Va. — A loud boom was heard and felt in Nitro Wednesday afternoon but it did not produce a fire.

The pressure-related boom happened at a production facility owned by Spirit Services, a waste oil business.

Kanawha County Fire Coordinator C.W. Sigman said firefighters at the Nitro fire station heard what happened and thought they had a fire but when they arrived on the scene there were no flames.

“According to the fire chief there’s no evidence of a fire. A pipe had ruptured and it sent out a pretty loud report,” Sigman said.

The state DEP said the valves on two tanks failed spilling 22,000 thousand gallons of water and used oil into the containment area. Sigman said workers were pumping it out shortly after the incident happened.

There were no injuries reported.
