Man accused in 1999 Lewis County murder extradited from Ohio

WESTON, W. Va. — An Ohio man charged in the 1999 murder of two Lewis County women has been extradited to the state.

Charles Stephen Freeman, 51, of Archbold, Ohio, was transported to Tygart Valley Regional Jail on Thursday.

Freeman, Joseph Metz, 39, and David Hughes, 58, are accused in the deaths of Metz’s mother Mary Friend, 46, and grandmother Maxine Stalnaker, 69.

The three were tried in 2013, but the charges were dropped when additional information in the case came to light.

Hughes entered into a deal in exchange for testimony.

Metz was again arrested in January and entered a not guilty plea to two counts of first degree murder on July 18 before Judge Kurt Hall. His trial is set for October.

Freeman was arrested on July 16 and arraignment has yet to be set.
