Fairer weather needed for State Fair

FAIRLEA, W.Va. — The CEO of the State Fair of West Virginia tells MetroNews she’s hoping better weather leads to better crowds at the State Fairgrounds in Greenbrier County.

The Fair opened last Friday. Since then, rain has hung over Fairlea. “Instead of large downpours at one time that kind of wash things out, it’s been slow and steady, but it’s easing up,” Marlene Pierson-Jolliffe reported on Tuesday.

“Folks are certainly eating. Our food concessionaires feel really good about their numbers, but we’ve been off a little at the gate just with the weather,” she said.

“We’ve had good concerts and we’re hanging in there and the great news is, from here on out through the rest of the week, this front that’s been kind of sitting on us seems to be moving away.”

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service said there was a slight chance for showers on Wednesday in Fairlea with clear skies to follow on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Scotty McCreery, an “American Idol” winner, was scheduled to perform at the State Fair on Tuesday night. The Wednesday night show is Wyatt Turner and Colton Pack followed by Foreigner on Thursday, Hunter Hayes and Sam Hunt on Friday and The Swon Brothers on Saturday.

The State Fair of West Virginia is now marking its 90th year. “There’s lots of awesome things here on the grounds to see,” Pierson-Jolliffe said.
