Wheeling Park’s Johnson ‘probably’ to need season ending surgery

Wheeling Park’s Savion Johnson rushed for just under 1,500 yards in 2013 and had high expectations heading into his junior season.

WHEELING, W.Va. — The bad news continued for Wheeling Park junior running back Savion Johnson on Tuesday who met with doctors after injuring his knee during preseason practice late last week.

Johnson has a badly sprained MCL and partially torn ACL.

The expected Kennedy Award candidate will likely need surgery, which would put him out for the 2014 season.

“Got bad news today,” Johnson posted on his Twitter account. “I’m probably gonna have to get surgery on my knee, so I’ll be out the whole season.

“Thank you to everyone who prayed for me, it meant so much to me to have so many (people) that cared,” he continued. “But just so everyone knows, I’m determined to be faster, stronger and better next year.”

A second opinion on Johnson’s knee reportedly said he could wait 4-6 weeks to let the knee heal and reevaluate if surgery is still needed — leaving some hope of a potential return.

Johnson ran for 1,484 yards and 20 touchdowns last year, helping lead Wheeling Park to the semifinals of the playoffs.
