Accused in 1999 Lewis County murder pleads not guilty, trial date set

WESTON, W. Va. — One of the accused in a 1999 murder case involving two Lewis County women has a trial date.

Charles Stephen Freeman, 51, of Archbald, Ohio, appeared in Court on Wednesday, entering a not guilty plea to two counts of murder in the first degree.

According to the Lewis County Prosecutor’s Office, jury selection has been set for October 20 and the trial will take place three weeks later.

A motion for bail has been denied as well.

Freeman was extradited last week from Ohio after he was indicted by a grand jury and arrested in July.

He, along with Joseph Metz, 39, and David Hughes, 58, are accused in the deaths of Metz’s mother Mary Friend, 46, and grandmother Maxine Stalnaker, 69.

They were tried in 2013, but the charges were dropped when additional information became available in the case

Hughes entered into a deal in exchange for testimony and Metz’s trial is scheduled for October.
