Boone County Grid Classic set

MADISON, W.Va.  The 2014 Boone County Grid Classic presented by Suddenlink will be held on Friday, August 22, 2014 at Scott High School in Madison, West Virginia where it will be Military Appreciation Night.

Boone County is home to three (3) high schools – Sherman, Van and Scott. In athletic events, Sherman and Van both compete in Class A while Scott competes in Class AA.  This is the only opportunity to see all three (3) Boone County high school football teams compete together on the same field since all of the teams do not meet during the regular season.

2014 is the third consecutive year for the event which has become a popular community gathering for all of Boone County to mark the kick-off of the new school year and football season.

“Suddenlink is proud to be the presenting sponsor of the Boone County Grid Classic”, said Michael Keleman, Suddenlink’s Government/Public Affairs Director.  “The Boone County community is very important to us and we are pleased to be part of it in this way”, Kelemen remarked.

The opening ceremony will include on-field introductions of all of the county high school, middle school, junior high school, and midget league football teams, cheerleaders and marching bands.

All current and former military personnel in attendance will be recognized. The West Virginia National Guard will be on hand with a rock climbing wall, obstacle course, and other interactive games and equipment displays throughout the event and will play a key role in the opening ceremony.

“If you want to experience a strong sense of community pride, then you will not want to miss the opening ceremony”, said Rob Nelson, event organizer. “Last year’s tribute to coal miners highlighted a common tie that binds our community together.  In addition to our coal heritage, another tie that binds the community is our rich history of military service.  We expect our tribute to current and former military personnel at this year’s event to be memorable”, Nelson concluded.

The event features three (3) officiated football scrimmages involving the three (3) high school football teams.  Each scrimmage will consist of two (2) fifteen minute quarters on a continuously-running game clock.

The cheerleaders from each area of the county will perform during their team’s scrimmages. Sherman’s and Scott’s marching bands will perform half-time shows at the completion of scrimmages one and two, respectively.

Gates open at 5:00 PM.  The opening ceremony begins at 6:00 PM.  Kick off for the first scrimmage will be at approximately 7:30 PM.  Former WVU football coach Don Nehlen and former Marshall football coach Bob Pruett will be available for pictures and autographs before and after the opening ceremony made possible by the Friends of Coal.

General admission is $7.00 for all students and adults.  Admission for current and former military personnel is $5.00.  Admission is free for all midget league participants in jersey / uniform.  Admission receipts will be divided evenly among the three (3) high schools. Concessions will be available.
