Raleigh County fire leaves 1 dead, 3 firefighters injured

SOPHIA, W.Va. — An early morning fire Monday in Raleigh County left one person dead and three firefighters recovering from injuries.

The blaze broke out shortly after midnight on Jasper Lane near the community of Sophia in a mobile home. Firemen arrived to find the trailer fully engulfed. The intense heat caused the fire to spread to a second trailer only a few feet away.

The state fire marshal confirmed the fatality, but had no further information on the identify of the victim.

Raleigh County dispatchers say three firefighters were taken to the hospital after they were injured by falling debris. Another firefighter suffered smoke inhalation. Authorities haven’t revealed their names or conditions.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the state fire marshal and West Virginia state police.
