Stabbing victim to be remembered Friday

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Funeral services are scheduled Friday morning for a WVU student who was killed last week in a bar stabbing.

DeVante’ Waites, left, helped lead Fairmont Senior to the AA championship game in the 2013 state tournament.

A large crowd is expected at the Woody Williams National Guard Armory in Fairmont to remember the life of Devante’ Waites. The 19-year-old Waites was stabbed at Bent Willey’s Bar just a block from WVU’s downtown campus Aug. 21.

Morgantown Police have arrested Robert Hernandez, 33, of Cumberland, Md., and charged him with murder. He is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing Monday in Monongalia County Magistrate Court.

Waites was a former Fairmont Senior High School basketball standout. He was a third semester freshman at WVU. The university plans to transport students to Friday’s 11 a.m. service.
