Flood threat remains into weekend

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Mother Nature continues to deliver one storm after another to West Virginia. The level of rainfall in recent days left the ground saturated and forecasters say further rain carries the potential for flash flooding.

“The most susceptible areas will be areas around Wood County and parts of southeastern Ohio,” said National Weather Service Meteorologist Andy Roche. “Also perhaps,Gilmer, Lewis, Braxton, Upshur, and Webster counties in West Virginia.”

The National Weather Service has placed the following counties under a flash flood watch until late Friday night:

Barbour, Boone, Braxton, Cabell, Calhoun, Clay, Doddridge, Fayette, Gilmer, Greenbrier, Harrison, Jackson, Kanawha, Lewis, Logan, Lincoln, Mason, McDowell, Mingo, Monroe, Nicholas, Pleasants, Pocahontas, Putnam, Raleigh, Randolph, Ritchie, Roane, Summers, Taylor, Tyler, Upshur, Wayne, Webster, Wirt, Wood and Wyoming.

Roche said radar showed a slow moving storm system northeast of the central part of West Virginia will move into the state Friday afternoon and night carrying with it the potential for a lot of rain.

“The potential for accumulation of rainfall is one to two inches in localized areas,” he said.

Showers and thunderstorms remain in the forecast for West Virginia for the weekend but they will become more widely scattered. The threat of rain decreases into next week with afternoon highs in the mid to upper 80s and nighttime lows in the 60s.
