Communities cleaning up after Friday flooding

DELBARTON, W.Va. — Cleanup continued in parts of West Virginia on Sunday following Friday’s flash flooding. Areas in Cabell County and Mingo County took especially hard hits as storms quickly dumped several inches of rain in some areas.

This person was swimming down one of the flooded streets in Huntington on Friday.

Significant street flooding was reported in Huntington and Barboursville while high water also covered parts of Route 119, Route 65 and Route 52 in portions of Mingo County.

By Sunday morning, the water had returned to normal levels in most areas.

Firefighters from Kanawha County were called to Mingo County on Sunday to assist with the search for a person who may have been swept away in Friday’s floodwaters. No other details about that missing person were available on Sunday morning.

Through the weekend, the Mingo County Commission opened a public assistance center at Mike’s Harley Davidson on U.S. 119 in Delbarton for those affected by the storms. Representatives of Catholic Charities, the American Red Cross and others joined in the storm response.

Debris pickups were scheduled for Monday in Mingo County. Residents were being told to move flood debris to the end of their driveways for removal.

Drier weather was in the forecast for much of the Mountain State for the start of the new week.
