ATLANTA, Ga. – The Mountaineer fan population in Atlanta, Ga. is growing by the thousands for the Labor Day Weekend ahead of Saturday’s Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game for West Virginia University and Alabama at the Georgia Dome.

But Ashley Clayton, alumni events coordinator for the Alabama Alumni Association, said the Crimson Tide would be represented well on Game Day too.

“It’s a nice little drive over for us (to the Georgia Dome), so we should be there in full force,” Clayton said on Thursday’s MetroNews “Talkline.”

“We played there last year and we’ve played the SEC Championship Game there a time or two, so the Georgia Dome is kind of a second home for us,” she said.

On Thursday, MetroNews “Talkline,” MetroNews “Hotline” and the MetroNews “Statewide Sportsline” were broadcasting from Laseter’s Tavern, located along Cobb Parkway, in Atlanta.

Rich Boden owns Laseter’s Tavern which has been hosting Mountaineer fans on game days in Atlanta for more than a dozen years now.

He said it’s something that started almost as an accident when a former WVU hangout for those with the Peach State Chapter of WVU’s Alumni Association closed. “I think everybody would love to have the West Virginia group like we do,” Boden said of the gold and blue faithful.

On Friday, the shows will move to Park Tavern on 10th St. in Atlanta.

For Saturday’s Game Day, the official WVU Mountaineer Madness Party will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Georgia World Congress Center which is located next to the Georgia Dome. The Mountaineer party will be adjacent to the Chick-fil-A FanFest.

Steve Ware, a Charleston native who now lives in Atlanta, is predicting a WVU win.

“We have a lot going in our favor. We’ve got the fan support. This is going to be a neutral site game. A lot of people, when it was announced, thought it would be a home game for Alabama, but it’s not,” he said Thursday. “I just think that our guys are fired up and they’re ready to win.”

Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. Saturday. According to WVU officials, there are still tickets available for Saturday’s game through the Mountaineer Ticket Office at www.wvugame.com or by calling 1-800-WVU-GAME.

Coach Holgorsen and staff have more talent and more players on roster now than any other time in WVU history. Save your BS for some other nonsense and please quit posting on this site.

      • James

Come on down! Here's a few other events happening, beginning today:

Thursday Night -- First of two Chick-fil-A Kickoff games between Ole Miss and Boise State at 8 p.m. at the Georgia Dome.

Friday -- Braves are home: The Braves play the Marlins at Turner Field, with first pitches scheduled for 7:35 p.m. Friday, 7:10 p.m. Saturday and 5:10 p.m. Sunday.

Friday -- DragonCon returns to Atlanta: The annual DragonCon science fiction, fantasy and pop culture festival takes over most of the large downtown hotels Friday through Monday. One of the highlights is the DragonCon Parade, which marches down Peachtree Street at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Saturday -- Second Chick-fil-A Kickoff game between Alabama and West Virginia at 3:30 p.m. at the Georgia Dome.

Saturday -- Other football games include Georgia Tech-Wofford at 12:30 p.m. at Bobby Dodd Stadium and Georgia-Clemson at 5:30 p.m. at Sanford Stadium in Athens.

Saturday -- Race weekend at AMS: A full slate of NASCAR action at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton will be highlighted by Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. Great Clips 300 and Sunday’s 7:30 p.m. Oral-B USA 500.

Other weekend events include the AJC Decatur Book Festival Friday through Sunday in downtown Decatur and the Atlanta Black Gay Pride festival all weekend at the Georgian Terrace Hotel.

GOOD NEWS -- The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has suspended all construction-related lane closures across the state beginning at noon Friday and continuing through 5 a.m. Tuesday. Load an apps for updated traffic reports all weekend.

MORE GOOD NEWS -- Gas prices: Motorists hitting the roads this weekend will find the lowest Labor Day gas prices in several years.
Atlanta’s average price for a gallon of regular unleaded early Thursday was $3.35. Last year’s Labor Day prices averaged $3.51, while two years ago, the average was $3.94.

BAD NEWS -- Pack an umbrella for those outdoor events, because there’s a chance of rain, particularly on Saturday. 60% chance of rain Saturday. 30% percent Sunday and 40% percent on Labor Day. Highs will be a degree or two on either side of 90, with lows in the low 70s. Load a weather app for Georgia.

Bring money! Spend freely! Enjoy it all. Take the Chick-fil-A trophy back to Morgantown.

Thanks for the updates but 2 things. First, buy your gas in SC before you hit the stateline. It will be 25-30 cents per gallon cheaper. Second, I wouldn't p!$@ on the Braves if their heads were on fire. Go Big Red Machine!
