Mountaineer fans head south

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Fans of the WVU Mountaineers are familiar with the trip to the Georgia Dome as they took off Friday for the season opener against Alabama in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.

The last time thousands of gold and blue clad fans traveled there was the 2006 Sugar Bowl when the Mountaineers upset Georgia.

The West Virginia Turnpike reported busy southbound traffic Friday. Yeager Airport in Charleston also reported brisk business with its four daily flights to Atlanta. Airport Manager Rick Atkinson said fans wouldn’t even have to get rental vehicles.

“They have a nice light rail and subway system to all the downtown hotels and the Georgia Dome is close to a lot of those hotels,” Atkinson said.

Mountaineer fans are expected to be out in full force for Saturday’s 3:30 kickoff. Atkinson said a Mountaineer victory would make the visit to Atlanta that much sweeter.

“Atlanta is just a great city to enjoy. It offers evening activities, dining, shopping and of course a football game and hopefully a win against ‘bama,” he said.
