Planned treatment center plans community meetings

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The T-Center is working with the parents group at Capital High School to organize a number of public forums to explain how the treatment center will operate.

There’s been some concern expressed by the Capital High community after the Kanawha County Board of Education gave the T-Center property across the Route 114 from the school to build the center.

T-Center spokesman Jim Wilkerson said he believes the project will get more support once people better understand its mission.

“I think that once people in the community learn about what the T-Center is and what it’s going to provide for the community–I think they are going to be more like us. I think they’re going to be very excited about how this is going to change the lives of the people in our communities and our state,” Wilkerson said.

The T-Center will be the state’s first drug-alcohol stand alone treatment center. Wilkinson said those accepted into the program will be there for 30 days. He said there will not be a lot of traffic in and out of the facility.

“The activity level of the facility is going to be very minimal,” he predicted. “In fact, for the treatment center that’s going to be built on top of that hill, the only people that would be going in there are the employees.”

The T-Center will also include a family resource center for counseling and education.

Wilkerson said the plans for the project have moved quickly and he’s not surprised there are questions.

“People learn something and they don’t really have a full understanding of what it is. There natural reaction would be to pull back,” he said.

Wilkerson anticipates there will be several public meetings scheduled.
