CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Vacationers hoping to fly directly from Yeager Airport to Disney World will get the opportunity again after PEOPLExpress Airline on Wednesday announced a new service three times weekly between Orlando and Charleston.

PEOPLExpress CEO Jeff Erickson said his carrier hoped to fill the void created by AirTran’s direct service being canceled.

“Where there have been historic traffic patterns that made sense, but they disappeared for other reasons, that’s why we’re here,” Erickson told reporters in the Yeager terminal Wednesday.

“They saw an opportunity and said, ‘Hey AirTran made money here, we can make money here.'” said Rick Atkinson, Yeager Airport’s general manager. “Doing the same type of service, same type of fares, and we even have lower costs.”

Service is scheduled to start Oct. 16.

A one-way ticket from Charleston to Orlando will cost $79. Like most discount carriers, carry on luggage, larger seats, and checked baggage will be an up-charge, but Erickson said even with the up-charge costs are a fraction of other carriers. As an introductory offer, flights can be booked until midnight Thursday for $49.

The planes will originate from Orlando and fly to Charleston with arrivals and departures slated for mid-afternoon Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Passengers will fly aboard 134-seat 737 aircraft on all flights.

Someone tell my why it costs so much to fly to Atl. now. About 2 months ago it was 300.00 now its 700.00. You can drive to Columbus,Ohio and fly to Atl. for less than 300. Whats up Yeager.

    • Plez Tellme

Can you drive to Columbus, pay for gas and wear & tear on your vehicle, pay for airport parking, possibly pay for a motel room, not to mention that most people's time is worth money (obviously not Cutty77's) and make the savings substantial enough to go through all this effort?

      • cutty77

Ok i will tell you. Driving to Colunbus is shorter than going to Morgantown. My car gets over 30 miles per gallion. No Hotel room in needed. Parking at Columbus is less than Yeager. Anytime you can save between 200 to 300 dollors is ok with me. Charelston WV is very expensive to live and do business here, thats why people are flying to Atl,and other places. We are last in everything in this Country, and you just pointed out why.

cutty, Just out of curiosity, I just checked the numbers.
For example , Flying to Atlanta from Charleston on Nov 10 - 14 ... $234

Flying to Atlanta from Columbus on the exact same days ....$212

Can you drive to Columbus for $22?

Those pesky facts always getting in the way of unsubstantiated opinions...

        • richard

cutty, I doubt that you are comparing apples to apples. Yeager is now always competitive with Columbus. If you check the exact same dates, you will find Yeager is competitive and sometimes even less than Columbus.
Parking is never cheaper in Columbus.

          • cutty77

            @ Richard
Yeager is never cheaper than Columbus.
