Eastern Panhandle Report: Week 2

By Michael Minnich — Mineral Daily News Tribune

AAA No. 1 Martinsburg (1-0) vs. Sherando (Va.) (1-0), Friday, 7 p.m.

The Bulldogs’ title defense began with a 24-7 home win over HD Woodson (D.C.).

Martinsburg scored the final 17 points, with Carter Walburn running for two touchdowns after Deamonte Lindsay had started things.

Class AAA No. 1 Martinsburg defeated H.D. Woodson 24-7 in week one of the high school football season.

Sherando opened with a 33-24 win over Musselman, scoring two touchdowns in less than three minutes midway through the second half to build a 33-16 lead.

Patrick Minteer threw for three scores for Sherando.

Martinsburg won last year’s meeting, 27-13.

AA No. 6 Keyser (1-0) at Berkeley Springs (0-1), Friday, 7 p.m.

Keyser trailed 17-0 in the first quarter and 30-14 at the half, but dominated the second half against a Clearfield (Pa.) team that hadn’t lost in the regular season in three years, winning 43-30.

Cody Rodeheaver set the pace with 190 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

Berkeley Springs lost at Clarke County (Va.) by a 41-6 scoreline in their opener. Clarke County led 12-0 at the half but played a game of keep-away in the second half, mounting long drives to keep the Indians off of the field before a 24-yard TD toss between Levi Haines and Keith Young capped scoring.

Keyser has owned this series by decisive margins in recent years, and last year was no exception: 59-0.

AA No. 7 Frankfort (1-0) at East Hardy (1-0), Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Frankfort was impressive in its opener against a Moorefield team that had given them problems in recent years: Brady Watson’s two rushing touchdowns, Gage Shaffer’s 225 passing yards, and six sacks from their defense sparked the Falcons to a 34-12 win.

East Hardy opened with a 38-14 win at Page County (Va.).

It’s the first meeting between the two schools.

A No. 10 Moorefield (0-1) vs. Pocahontas County (1-0), Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Wil Schoonover rushed for a touchdown and Josh Olmstead ran a kickoff back 95 yards for a score, but it was otherwise a frustrating night for Moorefield at Frankfort in the season opener.

The Jackets are the only team ranked by MetroNews in any of the three classifications that has lost a game, so there is still confidence in this team.

Pocahontas County went into the mountains last week and came home with a 13-6 win over Tucker County.

Despite being the same conference for most sports, this is a new game on the schedule this year.

Jefferson (1-0) at Mountain Ridge (Md.) (0-0), Friday, 7 p.m.

Jefferson doubled up conference foe Spring Mills in their opener last week, 48-24. Christian Johnson caught four touchdown passes and found the end zone on an 80-yard return, too.

Mountain Ridge opens their campaign after an uneven 3-7 2013 season and are hoping to return to the playoffs in Maryland after a two-year absence.

Jefferson won last year’s meeting, 28-6, and have won the last two match-ups.

Spring Mills (0-1) at Washington (1-0), Friday, 7 p.m.

Washington went on the road—and on the ground—to pick up a conference win over Hedgesville, 38-18, last week.

The Patriots ran for 281 yards and finished strong, scoring 30 of the final 36 points.

Positives in Spring Mills’ 48-24 loss last week were touchdowns from Demetrius Jalepes, Cody Hammond, and Devion Warnsley.

Washington handed the Cardinals the worst loss of their inaugural season, 75-0, last year.

Musselman (0-1) at Oak Hill (0-1), Friday, 7:30 p.m.

The Applemen lost to Sherando, 33-24, last week: Deonte Glover had all three scores, catching two touchdown passes and running for another.

Oak Hill, too, is looking to get back to .500 after a 42-7 loss at Lewis County last week. Oak Hill won a shootout last year, 48-35.

Hedgesville (0-1) vs. Millbrook (Va.) (1-0), Friday, 7 p.m.

Hedgesville fell to Washington in its opener, 38-18, getting touchdowns from Logan Gletner to Darryl Brown through the air and Steven Brown and Kiandre Brown. Milbrook won a 39-36 decision against Broadway (Va.) in their opener.

Hedgesville picked up their first win of the season last year in this series, 37-21.

Hampshire (0-1) vs. Elkins (1-0), Friday, 7 p.m.

If there was a surprise in last week’s results in this region, it was here, where Hampshire lost at Preston, 22-13.

Preston scored 16 points in the fourth quarter to overturn a 13-6 lead built by TD runs from Zach Rhodes and Jordan Grapes.

Elkins thumped North Marion on the road, 50-20, last week, the first of four straight road contests to kick off a season where the Tigers have only four games at home.

Hampshire won last year’s meeting, 30-7.

Petersburg (0-0) vs. Pendleton County (1-0), Friday, 7 p.m.

Petersburg was idle last week, a blessing after head coach Jeff Dodd missed a significant chunk of August camp after a bout of appendicitis.

Pendleton County took care of Tygarts Valley, 46-8, to kick 2014 off.

Petersburg lost a narrow 22-13 decision on the road last year.
