Indictment issued in stabbing death of WVU freshman

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A Monongalia County grand jury indicted the Maryland man accused of murdering a West Virginia University student last month.

The jury handed up a first-degree murder indictment Friday afternoon on Robert Hernandez, 33, of Cumberland, Md. He was charged in the Aug. 14 stabbing death of 19-year-old Devante’ Waites of Fairmont.

Hernandez, who is being in jail without bail, is scheduled to be arraigned in the coming days.

Police allege the stabbing took place outside Bent Willie’s bar near WVU’s downtown campus.
