MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The state Division of Highways has agreed to make interim changes at an intersection near Morgantown following the death this week of a 13-year-old boy.
State Sen. Bob Beach (D-Monongalia) met Thursday with DOH officials about the intersection of Grafton Road (U.S. Route 119) and Goshen Road. It’s the spot where South Middle School student Marlowe Stewart was killed Tuesday morning.
The DOH has agreed to repair yellow flashing lights on both the northbound and southbound lanes, as well as one of the traffic lights that appears to have been vandalized. Additional signage will be installed warning motorists of an approaching intersection and 35 mph advisory signs will be added at the approach.
A study and review of the intersection is also planned as part of a request to have full traffic signals added at the intersection and have the section of Route 119 near Ridgedale Elementary designated as a school zone.
Stewart, the son of WVU Associate Vice President David Stewart, was crossing Grafton Road on Tuesday morning to reach his bus stop when he was struck by an SUV. Authorities determined the incident was accidental.
