Driver in Monday fatal I-79 accident identified

STONEWOOD, W. Va. — The man who died as a result of an early Monday morning wreck on I-79 has been identified.

Authorities say Ronald L. Sayers was travelling southbound in an empty coal truck near the 112 mile marker between Stonewood and Lost Creek when the vehicle veered off the road, ran across to the opposite side, hit the median, flipped over and burst into flames.

Sayers was trapped by the wreckage and unable to escape.

The truck owned by Shinnston-based Nuzum Trucking had its cab completely destroyed by the fire, as well as a large portion of the trailer.

It is not currently known what caused the fire.

The Public Service Commission and Harrison County Sheriff’s Department are both conducting investigations into the accident.
