Tanker truck crashes on Interstate 79

UPDATE FRI   State DEP says none of the 1,000 gallons drilling byproduct that leaked from tanker got into the Elk River.

FRAMETOWN, W.Va. — A tanker truck crashed Thursday afternoon on Interstate 79 in Braxton County halting traffic in the southbound lanes.

The wreck took place between Frametown and Gassaway at about 4 p.m. The truck went through a guardrail and over an embankment toward a small tributary. Some diesel fuel spilled but  it was stopped from heading into the Elk River.The state DEP said the state DHHR notified water system intakes downstream on the Elk of the situation as a precaution.

The truck is from Spirit Services of Nitro. The driver was injured and taken to Charleston Area Medical Center.

One southbound lane reopened at 10:30 p.m. Cleanup is expected to continue Friday.
