Holgorsen after WVU’s thriller: ‘Everyone needed this one’

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen was soaked by rain, frustrated by mistakes and worried by his team allowing 37 points to Maryland again.

That’s where the similarities between 2013 and Saturday afternoon ended.

This time the Mountaineers piled up 694 yards, including 65 on the final series as they moved into long-range field-goal range for Josh Lambert, and beat Maryland 40-37 at Byrd Stadium.

“I just couldn’t be happier for our team, our coaching staff, our fan base—everyone needed this one,” Holgorsen said.

Despite finishing minus-three in the turnover battle, stalling out seven times in Maryland territory and allowing a punt-return touchdown, West Virginia (2-1) refused to let the game slip away.

“What a game. I don’t know if I’ve ever been part of a game that had so many drastic momentum swings,” Holgorsen said. “As far as keys to the game—shows what I know. We didn’t win the turnover battle. We wanted to finish in the red zone, and we obviously didn’t do that. We wanted to win the special-teams battle, but we saw how that went.”
