Funeral arrangements finalized for former First Lady

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Funeral arrangements have been finalized for former West Virginia First Lady Shelley Moore, the wife of former Gov. Arch Moore who served in the Governor’s Office for 12 years total.

The Moores met at West Virginia University and were married in 1949.  According to her obituary, Shelley Moore taught math for several years in Morgantown before the Moores moved to Glen Dale.  They had three children — Arch III (Kim), Shelley and Lucy.

Shelley Moore was at her husband’s side for 26 political campaigns starting in 1952 when he was first elected to the state House of Delegates and through his terms as governor from 1969 to 1977 and from 1985 to 1989.

She remains the longest-serving First Lady in West Virginia’s history.

Moore died Saturday at the age of 88 after battling Alzheimer’s Disease for several years.

A visitation is planned for Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Charleston at the University of Charleston’s Rotunda.  On Friday evening, a visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Grisell Funeral Home in Moundsville.

A funeral service for Moore is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Simpson United Methodist Church in Moundsville.  The family will receive visitors starting at 9:30 a.m.

A private graveside service will follow the funeral.
