Record number of adoptions recorded at Kanawha shelter

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association Animal Shelter has been a “no kill” shelter for the past year and this past weekend the shelter registered a record number of adoptions.

“We did 84 adoptions,” shelter director Chelsea Staley said. “We’re going strong through next Sunday the 21st (with the no adoption fee promotion),” Staley said.

A Kanawha County hotel stepped forward Monday with a $1,400 donation to help offset the adoption fees. La Quinta Inn & Suites in Elkview took $1 from every reservation in July for the shelter.

“Our adoption fees only cover the cost that we have in the animals so we lose money this week and contributions like this one from La Quinta help us waive adoption fees and find animals homes,” Staley said regular adoption fees are $85 for dogs and $61 for cats.

The shelter’s goal is to have a 92 percent save rate by the end of the year.

“Really we are right on target,” Staley said.

La Quinta Inn & Suites is the only locally totally pet friendly hotel in Kanawha County.
