Southern Report: Week 4

By: Fred Persinger II

#16 (AAA) Hurricane (2-1) at Princeton (1-2)

The Princeton Tigers continue their tough start to the 2014 season. Two weeks ago, Princeton traveled to Mitchell Stadium in Bluefield to take on the Beavers and lost 40-21. Last week, Princeton welcomed Class AAA #2 Capital to Hunnicutt Stadium and the Cougars left with an impressive 49-13 win.

Capital was led by Kashaun Haley who ran for 194 yards and five scores, while quarterback Tyhree Pratt was 9 of 12 passing for 121 yards and a score. It was not only a tough night on the scoreboard for Princeton, but it was a tough night on the injury front as leading rusher Jordan Jones had to leave the game in the first half with a ankle injury.

This week, Princeton will welcome another ranked team to town as the 16thranked Hurricane Redskins will make the trip to Hunnicutt Stadium. Hurricane is coming off a dominating 47-0 win over Riverside.  Quarterback Dylan Tinsley led Hurricane through the air in the win, going 29 of 42 for 364 yards — he connected with eight different receivers in the game.

Hurricane’s defense was just as impressive, holding Riverside to just 39 yards of offense — all of those yards coming on the ground.

This MSAC battle between Hurricane and Princeton will kick off at 7:30 p.m. in Princeton.

#8 (AA) Independence(3-0) at Shady Spring (0-3)

Two Raleigh County rivals battle this Friday night and it’s a matchup of two teams going in different directions. Independence is sitting at 3-0 on the season, the first time in a decade that the Patriots have gotten off to that good of a start, and coming off a 47-0 win over Mount View.

Independence had no trouble moving the football as the Patriots gained 280 yards on the ground and finished with 322 total yards of offense in the game. The defense also did its job, holding Mount View to just 13 yards of total offense in the game.

Ryan Brandstetter led the way on the ground with 74 yards on 10 carries while Chris Mills had 72 yards on seven carries. On the defensive side of the ball, the Patriots were able to force four turnovers, including three interceptions.

For Shady Spring, the Tigers have struggled this season and are still looking for their first win after coming off a 48-20 road loss to Greenbrier East. The loss was Shady Spring’s ninth straight, going back to last year.

Still, there were some positives coming out of the game as Shady Spring’s offense was able to move the ball with two players rushing for over 100 yards. Quarterback John Lively rushed for 142 yards and tailback Jon Hardy finished with 112 yards on the ground in the win. The Tigers’ defense couldn’t stop the big plays of Greenbrier East as the Spartans scored six touchdowns on plays of 30 yards or longer.

This will be the first home game for Shady Spring since opening up the season with a 55-7 loss to Princeton. Game time from H.B. Thomas Field in Shady Spring is set for 7:30 p.m. and can be heard on AM 560 WJLS and at WJLS.com.

Summers County (0-3) at Wyoming East (0-3)

Two teams that came into the 2014 season with high expectations are facing each other in week four as the loser could see their Class AA playoff chances significantly shot with an 0-4 start.

Summers County and Wyoming East both have started the season with difficult games — Summers County last week lost to James Monroe 37-14 and Wyoming East fell to Nicholas County 38-19.

Wyoming East finished that contest with just six yards rushing. Quarterback Aaron Griffith was able to move the ball through the air, going 11 of 33 for 175 yards.

Summers County was in the game against James Monroe in the first half, trailing only 7-6 — but the Mavericks exploded in the second half to put the game away with 30 unanswered points.

For Summers County, Dillon Smith led the way with 45 yards rushing, while sophomore quarterback Nate Grimmett, who is filling in for injured quarterback Matt Ryan, went 5 of 16 passing for 133 yards.

Kickoff from New Richmond is set for 7:30 p.m.
