MetroNews High School Football Power Rankings: Week 5

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The MetroNews high school football power rankings are voted upon weekly by a panel of 25 radio broadcasters and sports writers across West Virginia. The rankings include season record, total points and first-place votes in parenthesis.

Notes: Cougars’ running back Kashaun Haley ran for 259 yards and four touchdowns last week in the win over Parkersburg. A showdown with South Charleston is set for this week.

Notes: South Charleston quarterback Kentre Grier threw for 467 yards and six touchdowns as the Black Eagles beat Nitro 61-14. South Charleston has scored at least 43 points and given up no more than 16 points each game this season.

Notes: The Bulldogs lost at home for the first time since 2008 in the game against 5-A Tuscarora out of Virginia. The Bulldogs still haven’t lost to an instate opponent since 2009 as they look to keep that streak going this week at Morgantown.

Notes: Cabell Midland senior running back Alex Childers finished with 152 rushing yards and three touchdowns in the win over rival Huntington.

Notes: Junior Point Pleasant running back Cody Mitchell finished the game against Logan with a school record seven touchdowns, five receiving, one rushing and a defensive score..

Notes: Senior Jefferson quarterback Andrew King finished last week 18 of 34 through the air for 252 yards, three passing touchdowns and two more scores on the ground. Junior running back Marcus Burns finished the night with 173 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries in the win.

Notes: Spring Valley quarterback Tyler Brown finished the game against Ripley with 183 yards rushing and two scores, to go along with another 139 yards through the air and two more touchdowns.

Notes: The Hawks jump back into the top 10 after one of the more impressive wins in week four, beating Wheeling Park 17-14. The win served as a nice bounce back after falling to Brooke the week before. Hawks’ quarterback Jeremy Eckels last week scored one touchdown on the ground and another touchdown through the air for 26 yards to senior receiver Tristan Lucas. Lucas finished with a career high seven catches for 114 yards in the win.
9 PARKERSBURG SOUTH (3-1) 39

Notes: Parkersburg South has made a quick turnaround after a 2-8 campaign a season ago. Junior quarterback Garrett Gilkeson threw for 274 yards and four touchdowns in the win over Warren.

Notes: Junior Dylan Tonkery finished with a career high 166 yards on 26 carries in the win over Robert C. Byrd. The Indians accounted for 400 yards rushing, while holding RCB to just 123 offensive yards.

Notes: The Pioneers had the bye week to regroup after the loss to Point Pleasant. Another stiff challenge is coming up this week against unbeaten Mingo Central.

Notes: The Miners totaled 630 yards of offense in a thumping of Westside, 511 of that on the ground. Senior running back Chance Lester finished with 185 yards on the ground and a score in the win. Junior running back Deonte Joplin who just recently transferred back to Mingo Central, played on Friday night and finished with 135 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. Quarterback Stephen Hammond had three touchdowns in the win as well for the Miners.
5 FRANKFORT (4-0) 162 (1)

This week: vs. Northern Garrett (MD)

Notes: By no fault of their own, the Falcons fall one spot after Mingo Central’s convincing win over previously unbeaten Westside. Frankfort, meanwhile, rolled winless Berkeley Springs by 36 points.
