Season is Approaching the Halfway Mark!!

As we enter week number five of the High School football season, it’s difficult to believe that of the 116 teams that tighten the chin strap each weekend in WV, 85% of them will be halfway thru their 2014 regular season when this weekend’s games are wrapped up!  That means 99 of those 116 teams will have played 5 of their 9 or 10 game schedule.  I know it’s been said many times in year’s past, but this season really is flying by!

Now, with that many games having been played, the playoff picture in each class is starting to take shape.  In Class AAA, we have a total of 38 teams of which, 5 are still undefeated, 12 have just one loss, 10 have only two losses and the remaining 11 teams have three or more defeats.  Last year, of the 16 teams that made the playoffs, only 6 had more than two losses.  In Class AA, there are 40 teams and of those 40, 5 are still undefeated, 14 have just the one loss, only 4 teams have two losses and there are 17 teams with three or more defeats.  Last year in Class AA, 6 teams made the playoff field but of those six, four had only 3 losses.  In Class A, we have 38 teams in the classification and of those 38, we still have 6 that are undefeated.  Ten teams in Class A have just the one loss, 13 have only two losses and there are 9 teams in the small schools classification with 3 or more defeats.  And, last year exactly like the other two classes, 6 teams made the playoff field of sixteen and three of those six had four losses.  So, right now as we get ready to wrap up half of the season, we have 37 teams with at least three losses, all knowing they need to start a winning streak.

This week, we have several games that any high school football enthusiast would love to see.  In Class AAA, the really big game in the state will find undefeated South Charleston at the University of Charleston Stadium matching up against undefeated Capital.  Last year, Capital finished the regular season at 9-1 losing only to Huntington while South Charleston ended at 7-3 losing to Huntington, George Washington and Capital.  The final last year between these two teams was 34-31.  Also in Class AAA, the Knights of Cabell Midland will try and stay undefeated as they travel to Hurricane to take on the once beaten Redskins.  The Jefferson Cougars will try and stay perfect on the season as they travel to Stephens City, Va. to battle the once beaten Warriors of Sherando High School.  And, the Martinsburg Bulldogs will try and get back on the winning track as they travel to Morgantown to battle the once beaten Mohigans.  In Class AA, undefeated Mingo Central will travel to Wayne County to take on the once beaten Wayne Pioneers.  Last year, the Miners lost only 2 games in the regular season but one was to Wayne by 28 points.  Also in Class AA, once beaten Independence will travel to Wyoming County to battle the once beaten Renegades of Westside.  This game ended last year with Westside on top by 30!  And, the Flying Eagles of Robert C. Byrd will try and bounce back from last week’s loss to Bridgeport as they pay a visit to Grafton.  The Bearcats lost for the first time this season last week to the Red Riders of Weir.  In Class A, it’s a matchup of two unbeatens as the Ravenswood Red Devils from Class AA will host the undefeated Yellow Jackets of Williamstown.  These two teams met last year and Williamstown proved victorious 21-14.  Also, two more unbeaten teams, both in Class A will meet this Friday night as the Meadow Bridge Wildcats will welcome the Wildcats of Pendleton County.  Last year, Meadow Bridge defeated Pendleton County 28-15.  Another big matchup in Class A this Friday night will find the Maroon Knights of Wheeling Central trying to avoid their third loss of the season when they travel to New Martinsville to take on the once beaten Blue Eagles of Magnolia.  Last year, Wheeling Central prevailed by a final score of 27-20.

Don’t forget to check out all of the scores this weekend on our website at wvmetronews.com and be sure and join Dave Jecklin and me for GAMENIGHT which begins at 9:30 on Friday night!
