Summer 2014 had more temps in 70s than 90s

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The summer is gone, but meteorologists with the National Weather Service say if you thought it was a wet summer, you were correct, but if you thought it was cooler than usual, your perception isn’t quite right.

“It was generally a cooler than the average summer as many people have suspected, “said Greg Guillot, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Charleston. “Although not as cool as you might think.”

The average temperature for the Charleston area for June, July, and August was only .5 percent below the normal average. Guillot said the high temperatures only reached 90-degrees 10 times this summer. There were 18 days where the daytime temperature topped out in the 70s.

As for the coming fall, Guilliot said he expects it will be drier.

“Generally temperature-wise we’re looking at equal chances of slightly above average temperatures and precipitation looks to be right about average.”
