CHARLESTON, W.Va – No. 4 Capital (4-0) made a statement on Friday night from the opening play, as the Cougars romped top-ranked South Charleston (4-1), 45-21 from Laidley Field.
On the first play of the game, it was Capital running back Kashuan Haley going 73 yards for a touchdown as the Cougars set the tone from the get-go. The Capital defense put the game away from that point, suffocating the Black Eagles in the first half, holding them to -2 yards in the first quarter on just seven plays.
Haley finished with 118 yards on seven carries and that touchdown before leaving the game in the second quarter with a knee injury. His backup Silas Nazario filled in admirably as he turned in 107 yards on 14 carries and a pair of touchdowns.
Junior South Charleston quarterback Kentre Grier, who was coming off 467 yards, six touchdown performance, was under heavy pressure all night and held in check. Grier finished 18-of-32 for 248 yards and three touchdowns, but had two interceptions.
Black Eagles’ running back A.D. Cunningham finished with 49 yards on 18 touches in the loss.
