Tennant’s new ad debated on Talkline

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Natalie Tennant for Senate campaign is trying to move some polling numbers with a new television ad released this week according to a political analyst.

The ad claims Rep. Shelley Moore Capito gave her husband “insider tips” during the 2008 financial crisis and the couple made more than $100,000 while “West Virginians were losing their jobs and savings to Wall Street.”

Nathan Gonzales with the Rothenberg Political Report said Tuesday on MetroNews Talkline the ad is an attempt by the Tennant campaign to get the race back into the national discussion.

“They are trying to get a hit out there, try to move some polling numbers, try to pull it back into the discussion of the fight for the Senate majority,” Gonzales said. “In order to attract more fundraising, try to attract some outside help into the race.”

Tennant campaign spokesperson Jennifer Donohue backed the contents of the ad on Talkline. She said Capito showed a “pattern of behavior” while on the House Financial Services Committee.

“There are dates, times and questions that don’t add up,” Donohue said. “She had access as a member of Congress to information the rest of us don’t have and while regular West Virginians were losing their jobs and savings in the Stock Market during the collapse of 2008 her and her husband made money.”

Capito spokesman Kent Gates called the new ad a “Hail Mary” attempt by Secretary of State Tennant.

“These are false, negative attacks and allegations that have been out there for sometime and they were proven false long ago,” Gates said on Talkline. “She had no access to inside information. The allegations come from a book that was published in 2012 and it has been proven and well-documented that the congresswoman never attended the meeting that was discussed and she had no ability to act on inside information.”

Donohue maintained the allegations are not personal attacks.

“They’re facts. There are dates and times and dollar figures and they add up to some very serious questions,” she said.

A number of polls have Tennant down double digits in the race against Capito and the margin has been growing in recent weeks according to the polls. Gonzales said Tennant must take this kind of step in hopes of picking up more funding because, as it stands, she won’t be able to outspend Capito down the stretch.

“I don’t think Tennant has the funds to sustain an extended ad buy from now until election day,” Gonzales said.

Tennant and Capito will face off in a debate next Tuesday at the Clay Center that will be broadcast statewide.
