Man injured in Wetzel plant explosion dies

PITTSBURGH, W.Va. — A Wheeling man injured in an explosion at a Wetzel County plant last month died Wednesday night at a Pittsburgh hospital.

The Allegheny Medical Examiner’s Office reported Thomas Zahnow, 50, died at the West Penn Burn Center. He was taken there after the Sept. 19 explosion at Axiall Corporation’s Natrium Plant in New Martinsville.

“We are mourning the loss of one of our senior employees,” plant manager Jerry Mullens told WTOV-TV. “Our whole team is devastated by this loss. Our thoughts, prayers and support continue for the family.”

The other workers injured in the explosion are expected to make full recoveries.
