Week 6 statewide roundup: No. 1 and No. 2 fall in Class AA

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The top two ranked teams in Class AA both fell on Friday night in week six of the high school football season.

No. 1 Bluefield (4-1) fell to Richlands (VA) 28-14, while No. 2 Scott (5-1) fell in double-overtime to No. 6 Westside (5-1) 36-34.

“I’m just proud of my guys for hanging in there the way we did and we just found something that would work for us,” said Westside coach Larry Cook. “The defenses were going to make a big play down the line, it just happened that my guys made the last big play of the night and I couldn’t be prouder of them.”

That ‘last big play’ was a two-point conversion defensive stop that sealed the win for the Renegades after scoring first in the second overtime and converting on their own two-point conversion. Westside quarterback Justin Cogar ran for 227 yards on 39 carries and added another 91 yards through the air.

Scott’s Cody Harvey finished with 135 yards on the ground, while Hunter Bradley added 116 rushing yards in the loss.

In Class AAA, No. 1 Cabell Midland (6-0) rolled No. 12 Woodrow Wilson (3-2) 48-6 as the Knights finished with 524 total offensive yards. Cabell Midland quarterback Coy Pettit finished 193 yards passing in the win. The Knights also held Woodrow Wilson to 113 yards of offense, including just 17 yards on the ground.

No. 2 Capital (5-0) stayed unbeaten by winning a wild game over No. 14 Huntington (3-3) 28-25. The Highlanders’ three losses on the year have come by a combined nine points — all to top 10 opponents.

On Friday night, Huntington led 17-14 with 2:49 to go when Capital junior Miguel Bays took a kickoff return 82 yards for a touchdown to put the Cougars back in front 21-14. Capital also returned an interception 32 yards for a touchdown by Tyrell Davis less than a minute into the game.

“We’re disappointed in the outcome, but not disappointed in the effort,” said Huntington coach Billy Seals. “I’m proud of our kids and I would match our 3-3 team against any other 3-3 team in the state. Every team just wants to get in the playoffs – we don’t care what our seed is. But we can’t get there unless we take care of business a couple of weeks from now.”

Class AA No. 9 Wayne (4-1) kept its home winning streak going, winning for the 25th straight time from Pioneer Field. The Pioneers took down Class AAA No. 15 Morgantown (3-3) 28-9, scoring 22 unanswered points in the second half.

Wayne averaged 4.1 yards per carry in the game, while the Mohigans managed just 2.7 yards per carry.

“They just physically beat our butts on both sides of the line of scrimmage,” said Morgantown head coach John Bowers. “We couldn’t get anything going running the ball and they could – they pushed us around. They won the ball game. We’re just not a very good football team right now and I’ll take the blame for that. We’re just not very good.”

Wayne won the game without its veteran quarterback Grant Ferguson who sat out for the second straight game, still recovering from a concussion. It was Wayne running back Mason Hodge finishing with 135 rushing yards and a couple of touchdowns in the win.

In Class A, No. 1 St. Marys (5-0) held off rival No. 3 Williamstown (4-2) 20-18. Blue Devils’ senior running back Jeremy Pratt finished with 168 yards on 30 carries, including a 55 yard touchdown run in the win.

Williamstown quarterback Dakota Watson finished with 345 of his team’s 358 offensive yards in the loss. The Yellowjackets failed on a potential game-tying two-point conversion with under two minutes to go in the game.

Also in Class A, No. 5 Clay-Battelle (5-0) handed Valley (Wetzel) its first loss, beating the Lumberjacks 43-20.
