Bridgeport approves two recommendations to new CENTRA board

BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. — The city council recommended council member John Wilson and local attorney Christopher McCarthy for a joint vacancy on the Central West Virginia Transit Authority Board of Directors.

Last week, the Harrison County Commission named two new board members and the City of Clarksburg named two appointments as well.

There’s a fifth seat that is the subject of appointment by both the county commission and the City of Clarksburg.

“For a number of years, the City of Bridgeport has been solicited for a recommendation for that fifth seat and historically that has been filled by somebody on Bridgeport City Council,” said Mayor Robert Greer.

Wilson abstained from the vote and recorder Melissa Matheny voted against. Matheny said CENTRA should solicit public nominees not already involved in public service. McCarthy is a member of the Police Civil Service Commission.

Greer said public candidates did not respond as heavily as they did to Harrison County or Clarksburg.

“We’ve received very little direct contact from anyone,” he said. “I’ve found myself searching out qualified people. Kind of the opposite problem as what they’ve been having in the other two jurisdictions.”

The county reported abut 20 individuals interested in their two appointments while 10 inquired about Clarksburg’s appointments.

Greer said Wilson’s background in finance and McCarthy’s legal experience would be valuable for the board.

The Clarksburg City Council is expected to vote Thursday on which of the two recommendations—or a completely different candidate—will fill the fifth board position.

Up first for the new board will be finding a new general manager. John Aman announced his resignation effective Oct.10 and said he would not retain his position, outside the scope of his duties with the bus service, after serving his 21-month prison sentence for bank fraud. Former board member Zeke Lopez was appointed 2-1 by the previous board to fill the role in the interim, before Aman made his announcement.
