Kanawha Valley Report: Week 8

The stretch run has arrived for the high school football season. Several Kanawha Valley teams are largely secure in their chance to play int he post-season. A few more have work left to do if they want to finish in the top 16.

No. 1 Capital (6-0) at Woodrow Wilson (3-3)

The Cougars captured a major win last Friday night when they went on the road and won a shootout with Cabell Midland 35-28. Coach Jon Carpenter’s squad managed to silence many doubters and proved they will be a team to contend with on the road to Wheeling.

No. 1 Capital edged No. 2 Cabell Midland 35-28 in week seven of the season.

The game served as a breakout for Kashaun Haley who had been hampered by injury — he finished with 216 rushing yards and three scores in the win.

Beckley comes into the game with a record of 3-3 and needs a win to preserve a shot at making the postseason.

No. 3 South Charleston (6-1) at Winfield (2-4)

South Charleston has quietly ascended back into the conversation for a Wheeling appearance since its blowout loss to Capital. The Black Eagles face 2-4 Winfield Friday night and know they need to stay focused on themselves and improving with every snap of the ball.  Coach Donnie Mays’ team is young, but talented and believes it can run the table to get a favorable ranking at season’s end.

Last week, South Charleston defeated Ripley 70-14. South Charleston quarterback Kentre Grier went 13 of 23 in the win for 268 yards and five touchdowns. The Black Eagles scored on the opening kickoff, a 95-yard return for a touchdown by senior running back A.D. Cunningham.

No. 6 Cabell Midland (6-1) at No. 12 George Washington (4-2)

Cabell Midland dropped from No. 2 to No. 6 in the WVSSAC rankings after touchdown loss to Capital. The Knights will try to regroup and get back on track with a trip to Charleston to face George Washington.

The Patriots find themselves in a similar situation coming off a nightmare game last week against Hurricane, falling 37-27. It was a night head cach Steve Edwards Jr. would rather forget.

“It started out bad when the bus didn’t show up until late on Friday,” said Edwards. “At least this week we’re at home and know we’ll make it to the field on time.”

Hurricane defeated George Washington 37-27 in week seven of the high school football season.

It was only the second loss of the season for the Patriots, but they have several difficult games remaining on the schedule. Edwards said he’s confident his team will be able to shake off the Hurricane experience and start fresh this Friday.  Most would agree Cabell Midland’s running game is its strength, but Edwards cautions not to discount the Knights’ passing attack.

“They can throw it when they need to,” Edwards said. “The kid has a good arm and he can throw it.”

No. 12 Hurricane (4-2) at St. Albans (2-4)

The Redskins helped their cause greatly with the win over George Washington, but now need to build on the momentum.

Quarterback Dylan Tinsley finished the win over George Washington with 363 passing yards and three touchdowns on 20 of 35 passing — he completed passes to eight different receivers.

Senior receiver Brandon Ford finished with eight catches for 143 yards and two touchdowns for the Redskins. Tinsley also added 85 rushing yards and a rushing score as well in the win.

Coach Jeremy Taylor is confident in his squad’s ability to finish the job and get into the playoffs.

They’ll have to guard against a let down against a St. Albans team which is 2-4 and struggling. Taylor doesn’t believe that will be a problem, but does worry about having to play at Crawford field on grass after spending so much of the season on turf.

Hurricane’s offense has been bolstered by the return of several who suffered injuries earlier in the year, including running back Ethan Highlander who was a major spark for Hurricane against GW.

No. 15 Herbert Hoover (4-2) at No. 3 Wayne (5-1)

A 34-14 loss to arch-rival Sissonville a week ago caused Hoover to fall in the rankings last week. The Huskies’ task gets no easier Friday night when they roll into Pioneer field to face Wayne who may be playing its best football of the season in Class AA.
