Southern Report: Week 8

#3 (A) Greenbrier West (5-1) at #6 (AA) Bluefield (5-1)

Greenbrier West and Bluefield have always had a tough time filling out a 10 game schedule, so when that became a problem again this year for both teams, they decided to play each other. Greenbrier West started the first of its five straight road games with a 21-7 win over Pocahontas County.

Greenbrier West has rattled off three wins in a row after its only loss of the season against Magnolia. The Cavaliers offense has averaged over 240 yards per game, led by Jordan Tincher who has rushed for over 500 yards on the season. Greenbrier West’s defense has played well all season, registering 19 sacks as a team, led by Chase Harless who has six sacks.

The Greenbrier West defense will be tested this week against the very quick and talented Bluefield Beavers. Bluefield is coming off a 62-0 win over River View. The Beavers bounced back from their lone loss of the season to Richlands, Va.

Bluefield put the game away last week early, scoring 34 points in the first quarter, led by two scores from Corey Coppola. Bluefield rushed for over 300 yards in the game and the defense shut down River View, holding the Raiders to -68 yards rushing and 73 yards passing for a net of only five yards of total offense.

This will be the first meeting between these two schools. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m, at Mitchell Stadium in Bluefield.

#5 (AA) Westside (6-1) at #8 (AA) Nicholas County (5-1)

A big matchup between two top 10 teams in Class AA will take place this Friday night in Summersville. The Westside Renegades are coming off a 42-37 road win over James Monroe. Westside was once again led by quarterback Justin Cogar as he picked up 303 yards rushing on 33 carries and threw for another 156 yards.

Westside had to come from behind against a James Monroe team which is 2-4 on the season, but has lost tough games against Westside, Greenbrier East, and Wyoming East. The Renegades trailed 28-15 midway through the third quarter after a 16-play drive kick-started the offense for Westside.

Nicholas County is coming off a 43-13 home win last week over Webster County. The Grizzlies were led by running back Wil Mayes who rushed for 123 yards and scored 4 times. Nicholas County’s defense was able to hold Webster County to under 200 yards of total offense in the game.

This is a very big game for both teams as they try to position themselves for the possibility of hosting a first round playoff game. This will be the first meeting between these two schools.

A MetroNews High School Sportsline interview with Nicholas County coach Gene Morris is posted above.

#1 (AAA) Capital (6-0) at Woodrow Wilson (3-3)

For the second time this season, the Woodrow Wilson Flying Eagles will welcome a No. 1 team to Van Meter Stadium as the Capital Cougars come to town for homecoming. The Flying Eagles are coming off their second straight loss, a 24-0 shut out to Parkersburg.

The struggles continued at Parkersburg for Beckley as the Flying Eagles have not won in Parkersburg since 1986. Beckley committed six turnovers in that contest last week, managing just  158 yards of total offense in the game

Senior quarterback Brent Osborne accounted for 157 of those yards, 56 rushing and 81 yards passing. Parkersburg scored two times in the second quarter and twice in the fourth quarter. Parkersburg quarterback Josh Trembley only completed four passes, but three of them went for touchdowns.

The Capital Cougars continued their impressive season with a 35-28 win over No. 2 Cabell Midland.  Running back Kashaun Haley, who did not play in the game against Huntington two weeks ago because of a knee injury, came back last week and showed no signs of the injury, leading the Capital rushing attack going with 219 yards on 18 carries and three scores.

Alex Childress rushed for 200 yards for Cabell Midland in the loss. Capital is now one of just two teams that are still undefeated in Class AAA.

This will be the 22nd meeting between the two teams dating back to 1989. Capital has a 15-6 advantage and has won the last two, and five of the last six. Capital won last year at Laidley Field by a score of 34-0. Kickoff is set for 7:30 and you can hear the game beginning at 6:00 p.m. on the Big Dawg 99.5 WJLS and at WJLS.com.
