Notre Dame’s Cava named the AARP Scholar Athlete of the Week

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Santino Cava of Notre Dame High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of October 19.

A senior, Santino is a 4.5 g.p.a. student. He is a member of the National Honor Society and National Society of High School Scholars. He has served as a class officer for four years, and is an active member of Key Club. He is the son of Dan and Machelle Cava of Clarksburg.

Harrison County student athlete earns statewide honor.

A three-year captain for Notre Dame Coach Sam Alvaro’s Irish, Santino is a record setting running back who has rushed for nearly 5,000 yards during his career; establishing Notre Dame and Harrison County all-time rushing marks.

A three-year Class A all-state and all-Harrison County honoree, he earned second team all-state honors as a member of Notre Dame’s 2013 Class A football playoff team. Santino is also a member of the Notre Dame baseball team, earning all-Harrison County honors as a junior, and the Irish tennis team, serving as the men’s team’s top seeded player.

On a community level, Santino is actively engaged in volunteer and service activities in Harrison County through Immaculate Conception Church and various community groups. He serves as a volunteer with the Disability Action Center, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and The Soup Opera food pantry.

Following his graduation this year, Santino plans to pursue a degree in accounting or finance.

During the 2014 fall sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State.

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement.
