Southern Report: Week 9

By: Fred Persinger II

Princeton (3-5) at Woodrow Wilson (3-3)

Woodrow Wilson had an unexpected week off last week when the Flying Eagles were supposed to take on Capital. The game, as everyone by now knows, was not played because no officials were assigned to the game by the Mountain State Athletic Conference.

The teams couldn’t reschedule the game on Saturday because of players visiting colleges — the MSAC offered to pay for expenses for the game to be played on Monday, however the two sides elected to not play the game then, which would have led to a short week.

It was a bad situation for both teams as the players missed out on playing a contest due to something they had no control over.

Moving on from that, Woodrow Wilson this week has a matchup against longtime rival Princeton. The Tigers are 3-5 on the season and a win over Woodrow Wilson would knock the Flying Eagles out of the playoff picture.

Princeton is coming off a thrilling 27-26 (OT) win over Riverside. In the overtime period, Riverside scored first, but went for the two-point conversion and failed. Princeton scored on its overtime possession and converted on the extra point to get the victory.

Princeton quarterback Jay Palmer led the way, rushing for 248 yards and two scores on 27 carries. The Tigers have now won two games in a row after defeating St. Albans 62-37 two weeks ago.

This will be 57thmeeting between the two teams in a rivalry that dates back to 1924. Beckley holds a 35-20-1 advantage over the Tigers. Princeton broke a three game losing streak last year to Beckley, beating the Flying Eagles 28-21.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on Friday night. You can listen to the game on The Big Dawg 99.5 WJLS and online at WJLS.com beginning at 6:00pm with the pregame show.

James Monroe (3-4) at #14 (AA) Liberty-Raleigh (6-1)

James Monroe’s playoff run starts tonight in week number nine of the regular season. If James Monroe wants to get into the field of 16, the Mavericks must win-out. It’s a tough schedule on the way, however, with this week’s game against six-win Liberty Raleigh and then two teams from Mercer County in Bluefield and Princeton.

James Monroe is coming off a 35-6 win over Mount View last week, breaking a three game losing streak. The Mavericks broke open a close game by scoring 22 unanswered points to pull out the win. Quarterback Reed McNeer threw for 121 yards and one score while running back Grant Mohler rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown to lead James Monroe on the ground.

For Liberty-Raleigh, the Raiders handled their Raleigh County rival Independence rather easily 45-12, winning their sixth game in a row. Liberty got its offense rolling on the ground as Christian Whittaker led the way with 128 yards on just eight carries. Quarterback Hunter Wright couldn’t have done much better in the passing game, going 8-of-10 for 256 yards in the win.

Even though Liberty is sitting at 6-1 on the season, a playoff berth is not clinched yet for the Raiders. They have games remaining against James Monroe this week and then Class AAA Shady Spring and Class AA Wyoming East.

This will be the 8thmeeting between the two teams with James Monroe leading the all-time series 6-1. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. and can be heard beginning at 7:00 p.m. on AM 560 WJLS and at WJLS.com
