Tucker County’s Kyle named AARP Scholar Athlete of the Week

Mountain Lions’ student athlete earns statewide honor

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Kelsey Kyle of Tucker County High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of October 26.

A senior, Kelsey is a 4.25 g.p.a. student. She is a member of the National Honor Society and ranked at the top of her class. Her school activities include Spirit Club, Varsity Club, Foreign Language Club, Choir, Health Sciences and Technology Academy (HSTA) and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is the daughter of Dave and Amber Kyle of Parsons.

A four-year varsity cheerleader, Kelsey is a UCA and NCA All-American and an All-Potomac Valley Conference honoree. As a four-year member of the Mountain Lions’ track program, Kelsey helped Tucker County’s shuttle hurdle relay team earn a 2014 WVSSAC state championship.

During her career, she has been a state meet qualifier in the 400 meters, 300 meter hurdles, 4×100 relay, 4×400 relay and long jump. She has also earned All-Potomac Valley Conference track honors.

On a community level, Kelsey is actively engaged in volunteer and service activities in Tucker County through various community groups. She has completed more than 160 community service hours, serving as a volunteer with American Red Cross Alleghenies Blood Services and as a peer volunteer at Tucker Valley Elementary Middle School.

Following her graduation this year, Kelsey plans to attend Fairmont State University and hopes to continue her athletic career while studying pre-med. She hopes to eventually study medicine at West Virginia University.

During the 2014 fall sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State.

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement.
