Northern Panhandle Report: Week 10

Class A No. 14 Tyler Consolidated (5-3) vs. Valley (Wetzel) (5-3)

In what is possibly an elimination game, both teams are coming in facing adversity as the two teams try to make a late season push for the playoffs. Tyler Consolidated is coming off of a 34-0 loss to Magnolia, while the Lumberjacks came up on the wrong side of a 27-7 defeat against Doddridge County.

Wetzel will look to do a better job stopping the run as they allowed two 100-yard rushers last week in Wyatt Ford and Brandon Stewart. The duo slashed Valley for a combined 278 yards on the ground and accounted for four touchdowns.

Tyler Consolidated will just look to produce any kind of offense as the Knights have only scored six points in the last eight quarters.

Class A No. 16 Bishop Donahue (6-2) vs. Wheeling Central (4-4)

Class A sees another game in week 10 of northern panhandle teams vying for one of the last spots in the top 16. Two wins down the stretch should put Wheeling Central into the playoffs as the Maroon Knights face Class AAA Spring Mills in the regular season finale next weekend.

Standing in their way this week may be one of the hottest teams in the state as the Bishops come in winners of four straight games, outscoring their opponents 164-34 during that span. This should be the last real test for Donahue as the Bishops finish off their season at River View next week – a Class AA team that has struggled on the year.

Class AAA No. 9 Wheeling Park (6-2) at Class AAA No. 8 Parkersburg South (6-2)

A potential home playoff game is on the line in this battle of 6-2 squads.

South has to be riding high after their 59-34 beatdown of Greenbrier East last week. Wheeling Park, meanwhile, is coming off of a 42-21 loss to Steubenville (OH). This week, Wheeling Park will have to contain talented Parkersburg South quarterback Garrett Gilkeson who finished 10 of 20 last week for 219 yards. He also ran for 149 yards on 17 carries in the win.

If South is able to pull of the victory, it will set up a showdown in week 11 with its crosstown rival Parkersburg in a game that will be played for South’s seeding. If Park wins, it sets up a date with an up-and-down John Marshall squad that could be looking for a playoff berth itself and hungry for a win.
