Three dozen coal miners lose jobs in McDowell County

WELCH, W.Va. — Thirty-six coal McDowell County coal miners lost their jobs Monday when they were told by an Alpha Natural Resources subsidiary the mine was being “permanently idled.”

Brooks Run South Mining is closing the Cucumber operation near Welch because there’s a dwindling market and price for the mine’s metallurgical coal.

The company is keeping a few workers on to help with the closing of the operation.

The layoffs were not part of a WARN Notice. The workers were notified Monday morning.
