Detroit man gets 30 years for Charleston murder not 20

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Kanawha County circuit judge sentenced a Detroit man to 30 years in prison Thursday for his role in the April shooting death of a Charleston teenager.

Mark Gaddy of Detroit was convicted on a 2nd degree murder charge.
Mark Gaddy of Detroit was convicted of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Tymel McKinney.

Prosecutors agreed to recommend a 20-year sentence for Mark Gaddy, 24, after he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in September. He was with the man who killed Tymel McKinney. The 18-year-old was sitting on his front porch when he was gunned down. Gaddy’s earlier plea and promised testimony resulted in the shooter, D.J. Carter of Charleston, pleading guilty to murder. He was sentenced to life with mercy. He’ll have a chance for parole in 15 years.

Judge Bloom said Thursday he didn’t like the plea deal sentence recommendation in the Gaddy case because Gaddy has shown no remorse. So he sentenced him to 30 years. The judge denied a request by the defense to take back the plea deal.

Prosecutors said Gaddy had a gun that night and pointed it at McKinney but didn’t fire.
