Forever linked; Marshall remembers 1970 plane crash

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The brother of a Marshall University plane crash victim told a large crowd gathered on the Marshall campus Friday the 75 victims of the Nov. 14, 1970 tragedy did not die in vain.

“Everyone that perished that day had a calling in life,” Tom Shoebridge, brother of Ted Shoebridge, said. “Their sacrifice have made so many wonderful and great things for so many people.”

Ted Shoebridge was a quarterback for the Thundering Herd and he and his teammates were returning back to Huntington from a game with East Carolina when the crash occurred at Tri-State Airport.

Tom Shoebridge said many scholarships and other special programs were established in honor of the plane crash victims which keep giving today.

Marshall Athletic Director Mike Hamrick told the crowd the plane crash and Marshall will forever be linked.

“Whether you believe it or whether or like it this tragedy is woven into the fabric of our university and has helped make this university the great university it is today,” Hamrick, a former Marshall football player said.

The current AD at his alma mater also gave praise to the team that followed the team that was lost, the Young Thundering Herd.

“Sometimes we get dismissed but we held on. We held it together. We cared, we loved, we worked hard,” Hamrick said.

For the second year in a row the current Thundering Herd will wear the special helmets with the ’75’ on the side to remember the plane crash victims. Herd coach Doc Holliday talked about the decision Friday during his emotional remarks.

“We began last season when we won at Tulsa on the anniversary of the plane crash and we’ll make sure we wear that number every season in the game closest to Nov. 14,” Holliday said his voice cracking.

The Memorial Fountain, like it is each year, was turned off at the end of Friday’s ceremony.
