MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia coach Bob Huggins reflected on a tougher-than-expected 64-54 win over Monmouth in Friday night’s season opener.
“At the end of the day, you can say maybe we won one we weren’t supposed to win,” Huggins said. “But then, when you shoot it 31 more times than your opponent, you are supposed to win.”
Thanks to hefty edge in rebounding and forced turnovers, West Virginia attempted 69 shots to Monmouth’s 38. Yet the Mountaineers made only 18 field goals, one more than the Hawks.
“We had good shots and we threw it close like you’re supposed to,” Huggins said. “We just didn’t finish inside. But we can shoot it better than we showed today.”
