HURRICANE, W.Va. — A trio of Hurricane baseball players signed to play for high D-I programs on Friday. Pitcher/first baseman J.T. Rogoszewski signed with North Carolina, shortstop Trey Dawson with LSU and catcher Tate Brock with West Virginia.
“It’s so much fun to watch student athletes fulfill their dreams,” said Hurrican coach Brian Sutphin. “To put that much time into it and for there to be a reward in the end of it, it’s really neat to see.”
Rogoszewski went 8-1 on the mound last year as the Redskins won the Class AAA state championship, posting a 1.52 ERA and 60 strikeouts.
“It’s a dream any little league kid has,” Rogoszewski said. “I’m extremely proud of these other guys that I’ve been teammates with – they’re like family members. We’ve made each other better through the years and push each other to get better.”
Brock, meanwhile, hit .323 last year and had been committed to WVU since the summer of 2013.
“It’s a huge weight off of our shoulders,” Brock said. “I’m proud of these guys and we put in so much hard work for this. The coaching staff at WVU is second to none, it’s awesome. I’ve been on two visits up there and I fell in love with the school and the program, it’s awesome.”
Dawson was a WVU commitment as well before he switched recently to LSU.
“It feels great and it’s a blessing to have this opportunity,” Dawson said. “I can’t thank enough everyone who has helped contribute to my success.”
Another instate signee with WVU for baseball over the past week came from Wheeling Park standout pitcher Michael Grove.
