MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A double-overtime thriller was the highlight on Friday night of the seven opening round playoff games that were played. No. 7 Nicholas County edged No. 10 Scott in two extra sessions 28-22, advancing into quarterfinal play next week.

“It was a tough one, that’s for sure. Scott came in and gave us all we could handle,” said Nicholas County coach Gene Morris. “They did an excellent job.”

The two teams went into overtime tied at 16-16. Nicholas County scored a touchdown to start off the first overtime, leading 22-16 heading into Scott’s possession. The Skyhawks answered with a touchdown themselves, but the potential game-winning extra point was blocked, forcing a second overtime.

GameNight: Nicholas County coach Gene Morris on 2-OT win

“We called a timeout and just made sure that we weren’t going to drop our heads – we wanted to put some pressure in there and see if we could get a guy free to rush the kicker and get someone in his vision,” Morris said. “We were fortunate enough to be able to do that and get it blocked. The seniors really stepped up and they were not about to give up in that situation.”

In the second overtime, Nicholas County picked off a Scott pass to start off the extra session. The Grizzlies then won the game on a 20-yard touchdown scamper from standout running back Wil Mayes. Mayes had a huge game overall for Nicholas County, rushing for 180 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries. He also added a 65-yard interception return for a score in the second quarter as well in the win.

“He steps up all of the time and makes plays,” Morris said. “That’s just his character, that’s the way he plays the game. He’s a ball player and that’s just all you can say about him. He does a lot of the things that you just don’t coach. You can’t speak highly enough about Wil. He’s someone you want on your club and you really don’t want to face.”

Also in Class AA, No. 1 Bridgeport rolled to a 50-0 halftime lead in route to a 50-14 win over No. 16 Liberty Raleigh. The Indians put up 317 yards of offense on 45 plays and limited Liberty to just 53 yards in the first half with starters in the game.

“Obviously we’re pleased,” said Bridgeport coach Josh Nicewarner. “Our offense seems to feed off of our defense and I can’t say enough about them. We had three or four picks tonight up against a very good quarterback. Going into the second round of the playoffs, you definitely want to say you’re improving every week and that’s what we continue to do.”

The Indians will face No. 8 Robert C. Byrd in quarterfinal play next week after RCB handled No. 9 Keyser 38-14. Robert C. Byrd running back Ben D’Annunzio finished with nearly 200 yards rushing in the game and three touchdowns — the Flying Eagles led 10-0 at the break, but busted the game open in the third quarter.

Class AA No. 4 Mingo Central fell behind 7-0 against No. 13 Sissonville, but then scored 35-unanswered points to eventually win 35-13.

In Class AAA, No. 1 Capital rolled No. 16 Parkersburg South 70-0 as quarterback Tyrhee Pratt finished with over 300 yards passing and five total touchdowns in the win.

GameNight: South Charleston coach Donnie Mays on win over Spring Valley

No. 6 South Charleston pulled away late from No. 11 Spring Valley, beating the Timberwolves 55-36. Black Eagles’ quarterback Kentre Grier was 14 of 21 for 216 yards and five touchdown passes, to go along with two more scores on the ground. C.J. Perkins ran for 144 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries, adding 66 yards receiving and two more scores as well in the win.

“We knew it wasn’t going to be easy. The second time around is always tough,” said South Charleston coach Donnie Mays. “Our kids really played hard and kept fighting back. It was like a boxing match for a while as we kept throwing punches back-and-forth. We got a couple of breaks and pulled away.”

In Class A, the lone Friday night game saw No. 10 Buffalo beat No. 7 Doddridge County on the road 20-0. Buffalo’s Jordan Tucker scored two touchdowns and collected 92 yards on 21 carries in the win.
