Miley prepares to move out of House Speaker’s office

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Outgoing House of Delegates Speaker Tim Miley (D-Harrison, 48) said he would like to lead the Democratic minority in the state House of Delegates in the New Year.

“We’ll just work with the Republicans to do good things for West Virginia,” Miley said on Tuesday’s MetroNews “Talkline” of the transition to Republican leadership that’s now happening at the State Capitol where November interims will wrap up on Wednesday.

In January, the GOP will officially take over control of the House, with a 64-36 member edge, for the first time in more than 80 years.

“Obviously, I would have preferred a different result, but anyone who allows themselves to get caught up in politics and the titles and positions they hold really need to sit back and reevaluate the reason they’re in politics and in elected office,” Miley said.

“Am I disappointed? Sure. Is the sun going to stop coming up and the Earth going to stop turning? No, it’s not.”

First elected to the House in 2004, Miley was re-elected during the Nov. 4 general election.

A former House Judiciary Committee chair, he was sworn in as the 56th Speaker of the House of Delegates in June 2013. A near-partisan vote, 53-44, made him the replacement for former Speaker Rick Thompson who was appointed secretary of the West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance.

Miley lead the House, which was split 53-47, during the 2014 Regular Legislative Session.

The session was largely dominated by legislation written in response to the Freedom Industries chemical spill which happened on the session’s second day.

Current House Minority Leader Tim Armstead (R-Kanawha, 40) is expected to be selected to be the 57th Speaker of the House when the House Republicans meet.

Lawmakers will return to Charleston for another round of interim meetings from Dec. 15-17 before the start of the 2015 Regular Legislative Session on Jan. 14.
