CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Preston Humphreys of Ravenswood High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of November 23.

A junior, Preston is a 3.8 g.p.a. student. He is a member of the National Honor Society, and his school activities include Student Council, Service Learning program and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is the son of Jeff and Trudy Humphreys of Ravenswood.

A kicker and defensive back for coach Mick Price’s Red Devils, Preston has connected on 32 extra point (PAT) attempts and one field goal this season. In last week’s opening round of West Virginia Class AA playoff action, his extra point kick with :44 seconds remaining capped No. 13 Ravenswood’s 42-41 upset of No. 3 Bluefield. Humphreys has also seen playing time on offense with the Red Devils this season, scoring two touchdowns – one rushing, one receiving – in Ravenswood’s week two win at Webster County.

On a community level, Preston is actively engaged in volunteer and service activities in the Mid-Ohio Valley through his church and various community groups. He has served as a Youth Group leader, and a volunteer with The Salvation Army and Jackson County Adopt-A-Family Holiday programs. He also maintains a visible presence in his community, performing volunteer service to assist elders living in his neighborhood.

During the 2014 fall sports season, one high school student athlete has been selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs weekends on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State.

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement. AARP West Virginia and MetroNews thank those who submitted nominations during the 2014 recognition program.
